"Coron, Palawan Unveiled: A Comprehensive Guide to Paradise"

Updated: Sep 21, 2024

Imagine stepping onto an island where the sand is so white it almost glows, and the waters are some of the clearest blue you’ll ever see. Welcome to Coron, in the province of Palawan. Known as a diver's paradise, its lagoons and lakes are like nature’s canvas, painted with the most vibrant colors. I’ve visited Coron before, and I find myself wanting to go back again and again. If you're wondering where to go in the Philippines, Coron is a must-see.

Getting to Coron

By Air

There are several flights daily from Manila to Coron. Your best bets for this journey are Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific.

By Sea

For a different experience, and if you are not short for time, consider taking a 13-hour ferry boat from Manila port to Coron. Since departures aren't as regular, it’s wise to schedule your trip well in advance.

Our Adventure

Bright and early, our journey kicked off from Manila to the island of Coron. Boarding a snug Cebu Airlines propeller plane, designed for just about 60 people, we were airborne for a short flight lasting around an hour and a half. If you're heading out from Manila, my advice—arrive a good two hours early. The queues at the airport can stretch longer than you'd anticipate, and the terminal feels more like a bustling marketplace than a departure lounge.

To save yourself from potential heartache (and missed flights), I highly recommend checking in online and keeping a screenshot or printout of your boarding pass handy. The Philippines' network can be unpredictable at best, so it's better to be prepared than sorry.

Securing a window seat is a must on this flight. The aerial views of the Palawan islands are something straight out of a travel vlogger's dream—you won't want to miss it. However, my excitement took a bit of a nosedive upon landing. Despite its popularity among tourists, Coron's airport felt forgotten by time: small, aged, and in dire need of a facelift. It's the first glimpse visitors get of this paradise, and frankly, it could be a lot more inviting.

Our ride from the airport, arranged by the travel agency, navigated through a mix of rugged and smooth roads to ASIA GRAND VIEW Hotel. About 35 minutes later, we were greeted by a lush garden oasis, bursting with tropical fruits and flanked by two inviting pools. The ASIA GRAND VIEW HOTEL had spacious rooms with all the essentials and a restaurant with a viewdeck overlooking the breathtaking Coron Bay. The restaurant serves up hearty Filipino favorites, such as Pancit, Sinigang, and other Filipino favorites.

After settling in, I couldn't resist sending my Mavic 2 Drone DJI skyward to capture the scenic beauty encircling our temporary home. Though the beach wasn't within walking distance, the resort's charm more than made up for it. Our stay, totaling around $500 for two nights in two rooms, felt like a steal, despite the slow Wi-Fi and lack of complimentary breakfast.

After capturing the surrounding areas of the Asia Garden from above, we hopped onto a local tricycle, the iconic mode of transportation in the Philippines, and we delved into the heart of the town of Coron. Our stroll took us past scenes straight out of a postcard, pausing now and then to capture the moments. A highlight in town was conquering the approximately 700 steps climb to a renowned lookout point of Mt Tapyas. The effort was rewarded with a breathtaking view: the sprawling town below us, framed by the stunning azure waters of Coron, and the daily life of its people unfolding like a live painting.

The Boat Tour Ultimate Package

The next day promised even more adventure—a boat tour around Coron's world-famous tourist attractions. We navigated back to town on a tricycle, but boarding the boat was a challenge, thanks to the makeshift plank walkway. Balancing across the planks while the boat bobbed on the waves was a test of nerve. Once aboard, we found our spot on the upper deck, ready to soak in the island's beauty. The tour took us to some of the most stunning spots around the island, each a marvel of nature's wonders. Our first stop was called the "Coral Garden." The Coral Garden in Coron is like a hidden underwater treasure. Imagine diving into crystal-clear waters and finding yourself in a colorful world full of life. This spot is famous for its vibrant corals that come in all shapes, sizes, and dazzling colors. It's not just the corals that make this place special; it's also home to a variety of fish and marine life, making you feel like you're swimming in a giant, natural aquarium. Divers and snorkelers love exploring here because every look around reveals something new and exciting. Whether you're an experienced diver or trying snorkeling for the first time, the Coral Garden is a must-see for anyone visiting Coron, offering a glimpse into the rich underwater ecosystem of Palawan.

Then came the moment that would mark the trip with a mix of awe and regret. Having brought a drone specifically to capture Coron from the skies, I was eager to let it soar over the coral reefs. The flight went smoothly at first, capturing mesmerizing footage of the crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. But trouble brewed as I attempted to land on the swaying boat. A sudden wave, a miscalculation, and my drone clipped the boat's structure, plummeting into the salty waters below. Thanks to the quick actions of one of the boat's crew, the drone was retrieved, but the damage was done. Despite efforts to revive it, my drone was lost to the seas, a painful $1K lesson learned.

Despite this setback, the boat tour unfolded with incredible moments. We swam among the corals, marveled at a sunken ship, and lazed in the pristine waters of the Twin Lagoon. The Twin Lagoon - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go is like stepping into a secret world hidden within the cliffs. It's made up of two stunning lagoons, one visible from the boat and the other hidden behind towering karst limestone cliffs. To get from the first to the second, you either swim through a narrow crevice at low tide or climb a ladder over the rocks when the tide is high. The water in these lagoons is a mix of fresh and saltwater, creating layers of different temperatures, which is a unique experience when swimming. The clear, emerald waters against the backdrop of the cliffs are breathtaking, making you feel as though you've discovered an untouched paradise. The serene beauty, the quiet, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature’s grandeur make the Twin Lagoon my favorite spot in the tour. It’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or just floating around and taking in the incredible scenery.

Following our visit to the lagoon, we made our way to an island known as Beach 91, where we were treated to an incredible lunch. The spread was a seafood lover's dream, accompanied by a variety of Filipino favorites and rice, all served up buffet style. This delightful meal was included in our tour price, so we didn't have to pay extra. We spent about an hour at this spot, capturing loads of photos. After lunch, we had the opportunity to do some kayaking around Beach 91, adding an extra layer of adventure to our experience. Gliding over the clear waters with a paddle in hand was the perfect way to digest our meal and explore the surrounding beauty from a different perspective.

Our adventure didn't stop there. Next on our itinerary was CYC Island, a place that left me absolutely mesmerized. With its pristine white sands, abundant palm trees, and a collection of hammocks and picnic tables nestled under the shade, the island offered a picture-perfect backdrop. It felt like stepping into a postcard, with stunning views all around. I couldn't resist lounging in one of the hammocks, soaking in the tranquility of this untouched paradise. CYC Island quickly became one of my favorite spot on the tour, a reminder of the natural beauty that Coron has to offer.

As we wound down our tour with a visit to the serene Kayangan Lake. Kayangan Lake is often hailed as the cleanest lake in the Philippines, and it's easy to see why. Nestled among towering limestone cliffs, this stunning freshwater lake is accessible via a moderately challenging trek up and then down a rocky path. The journey itself is part of the adventure, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding crystal-clear waters and lush greenery.

Once you arrive, the pristine beauty of Kayangan Lake unfolds before you. The water is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom in certain parts. Swimming in the lake feels like floating in another world, with the surrounding cliffs and vibrant underwater ecosystem adding to the surreal experience. The lake's tranquility and natural beauty make it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Coron. It’s a place where you can truly connect with nature, dive into the cool, refreshing waters, and let the peaceful surroundings rejuvenate your spirit.

After exploring Kagayan Lake, we were all worn out. The excitement and activities of the day had taken their toll, and on the journey back to town, many of us in the group couldn't resist closing our eyes for a bit of rest. It's a gentle reminder of how much energy adventure can require, but also how satisfying it feels to have spent it on such beautiful experiences.

For those considering a more personalized adventure in Coron, I'd suggest looking into a private boat tour if it fits within your budget. The beauty of a private tour is the freedom it offers; you get to tailor your itinerary to your preferences, spending time exactly where your heart desires without the constraints of a pre-set schedule. While the shared boat tours offer a wonderful experience and a chance to meet new people, they operate on a fixed plan, sometimes referred to as the "boat tour agenda." This means you're bound to the group's timetable and chosen stops.

Opting for a private tour allows you to explore Coron's hidden gems and popular spots at your own pace, making for an unforgettable and highly personalized island experience. It's a chance to craft your perfect day out on the water, visiting the places that most capture your imagination.

Final Thoughts

Coron is a place that stays with you. Whether you’re diving into its underwater world, lounging on its beaches, or trekking up its hills, the experiences you have here are unforgettable. If you’re planning a trip to the Philippines, Coron should definitely be on your list. From the chaotic airport lines to the peaceful island life, it’s all part of the adventure.
